Benefits of Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) Service

Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) refers to scanning of conventional glass slides in order to produce digital slides. The current standard practice in diagnostic veterinary pathology is based on conventional light microscopy performed by an onsite pathologist. However, the use of digital pathology is on the rise, as many human pathology laboratories are using scanners to process digitalized glass slides. Once the glass slides are digitalized, they are stored on an image server and analyzed externally by different consulting pathologists with the best expertise in the field.

The benefits of this procedure are as follows:
  1. Multiple pathologists working in distant locations can analyze the same case and provide the most accurate diagnosis possible, which mirrors recently accepted workflow in human pathology and radiology departments
  2. The scanned images are safely stored and could be easily retrieved at any time, while glass slides may be lost or broken
  3. Digital photographs can be easily sent to a referred clinician for various purposes (review of pathology with the client, case presentation, poster presentation, manuscript publications, etc.)
